KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What vegan material used in the new BMW Series 5 sedan has leather-like texture and perforation?

Per BMW the leather-like vegan material used for the Series 5 sedan is called Veganza.
  • How many powertrain options is available for the new BMW Series 5 sedan?

The new BMW Series 5 sedan has two all-electric powertrain options: the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and the i5 eDrive40.
  • Offered as part of its standard equipment and a first at BMW, the new 5 Series sedan will come with seats, door panels, a steering wheel, and a dashboard finished in vegan material. Optionally available are seats finished in Veganza with leather-like properties and perforation, which further enhance the interior ambiance while still being mindful of avoiding animal-derived materials.

Nevertheless, those who still want the feel and touch of genuine animal hide can get the optional BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery.

Accompanying the vegan interior is the BMW Curved Display, which consists of a 12.3-inch Information Display and a 14.9-inch Control Display.

Keeping in line with its vegan interior and theme of sustainable premium mobility, the new BMW 5 Series sedan is offered in two all-electric powertrains. First is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive which boasts 601 horsepower (hp) and 820 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque thanks to two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles.

Acceleration time for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is 3.8 seconds from zero to 100 kilometers per hour (kph).

The other variant is the BMW i5 eDrive40. Its electric motor drives only the rear wheels for a maximum power output of 340hp and 430Nm of torque. It speeds from a standstill to 100kph in 6.0 seconds.

The new BMW 5 Series sedan also premieres in-car gaming. Through the aforementioned BMW Curved Display equipped with BMW Operating System 8.5, owners can play casual games while the vehicle is stationary.

BMW is still to confirm what these so-called casual games are but based on the photos revealed by the carmaker, they look pretty much like titles one will find on a Nintendo Wii. Nevertheless, we’re hoping that it can one-up the Tesla Model X, which reportedly can play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Per BMW, the market launch of the new 5 Series Sedan will begin in October 2023.

Like all previous model generations, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is produced at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 are also manufactured.
