Given that electrified mobility is the way to go, Toyota will introduce a hybrid version of the Hilux by next year.
The Japanese automaker’s arm in Australia said that the hybrid Hilux — which will be powered by a 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine with a 48-volt battery and small electric motor-generator — is set to arrive in their country come the first half of 2024.
Should it become available, the hybrid pick-up truck will be 10-percent more fuel efficient than the current diesel-powered Toyota Hilux available in the Land Down Under.
Further, Toyota said that the incoming Hilux hybrid will have a stop/start system, improved drivability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the introduction of 48-volt technology to Hilux demonstrated the marque’s commitment in trimming down fuel consumption without compromising performance and capability demanded by customers.
"We are continually striving to reduce the fuel consumption of our vehicles to help reduce on-going costs for customers, as well as helping reduce our environmental impact, and the addition of 48-volt technology to our biggest-selling vehicle line will contribute to this," Hanley said.
"This new technology will not only improve fuel consumption, but customers will also benefit from enhanced on and off-road performance, making the HiLux even more appealing for a weekend away or longer term excursion into the outback," he added.
Toyota shall provide further details closer to launch next year.
